September 10, 2016—After a year hiatus, BWSM is again leading the Orange County Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Committee. Shanti Hill is Chair of the Committee for 2016-2017, and Erica Cipparone is Co-Chair. In addition to her role as Chair, Shanti kicked off the committee meetings this term with a presentation entitled “Copyright Litigation Post-Petrella v. MGM: Special Issues with Old Infringements.” Kevin Wimberly is scheduled to provide a presentation entitled “How Florida’s Medical Marijuana Vote Might Affect IP” on October 4, 2016. Then, as part of a three-hour Continuing Legal Education program on November 4, 2016, Terry Sanks is providing a presentation on “Recent Trade Secrets Protection Developments and Practitioners’ Tips: What is the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016? How Does It Vary from the Florida Uniform Trade Secrets Act?”

June 14, 2016—Terry Sanks was invited to be an author for the book entitled Recent Trends In Patent Infringement Lawsuits, 2016 Edition published by Thomson Reuters/Aspatore Books. The book published June 2016. The title of Terry’s chapter is Recent Trends in Patent Infringement Litigation have had a Profound Effect on Strategy.
June 9, 2016—Super Lawyers magazine recently published the 2016 edition of its magazine and several BWSM attorneys were included. Terry Sanks and Jim Beusse were recognized as Super Lawyers. Amber Davis and Kevin Wimberly were recognized as Rising Starts. Each year, no more than five percent of the lawyers in Florida are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor. With respect to Rising Stars, no more than 2.5 percent of lawyers in Florida are selected to receive this honor.

May 24, 2016—Terry Sanks and David Maire have been recognized as “IP Stars” by Managing Intellectual Property (“MIP”) magazine in the fourth edition of the IP Stars Handbook—a Managing IP for 2016. Dave is recognized as a “Patent Star” for his patent prosecution practice. Terry’s recognition resulted from his varied legal practice covering primarily patent prosecution and IP litigation, as well as trademarks, copyrights, unfair competition, trade secrets, and licensing. May 21, 2016—With the 138th International Trademark Association Annual Meeting occurring in Orlando this year, BWSM hosted a well-attended reception for foreign agents on the first evening of this six-day event. In addition to foreign trademark attorneys attending nearly an equal amount of foreign patent attorneys were also in attendance. This reception provided BWSM attorneys and staff an opportunity to forge more binding relationships with many of the foreign agents the firm currently uses and a chance to meet potential new foreign agents. The 2016 Annual Meeting had over 10,000 registrants, making this meeting the largest in INTA’s yet.
May 17, 2016—BWSM is hosting a six-part lecture series on six different intellectual property topics at the Florida Institute of Technology (“Florida Tech”) as part of Florida Tech’s Skill Space continuing education program. This luncheon lecture series is free for Florida Tech students, faculty and staff whereas there is a nominal charge for others attending. The presenters are BWSM attorneys John DeAngelis and Fred Romano. The first lecture occurred this week and the topic was “How Can I Use Copyrights to Protect and Grow My Business Assets?”
